WALK IT OUT 2015: A NEW DAWN

This year the Humber Fashion Arts Students Walk It Out event was a huge success! With gorgeous pieces from: Narces, LaMarque, Stephan Caras, Lucian Matis, Madame Moje, Tocca Finita and Lazar Couture the event was graced by breath taking garments. The mood that was created by the students was unrivalled by anything shown before. The appetizers were fantastic and the drinks we're delightful, but above all the social aspect and atmosphere of the show we're outstanding.

Production Team Member Roxanne Deblois: " I was part of the production team, but mostly the models! I organized the models auditions, did the choreography, music and all that stuff! It was a long journey, a lot of ups and downs, but in the end, the show was spectacular!!! I am very proud and happy of what we did!"

Great job to everyone involved with the show, the amount of work that went into it was unimaginable, and a big thank you to Eugenia for all her hard work and devotion.

Click HERE to view our slideshow for the night! A big thanks to Jayson Jamandron for his wonderful photos!

The Perfect Body

The definition of the 'perfect body' has been discussed and tossed around for decades. The fact of the matter is that no one has a 'perfect body', every one has a body that is designed perfectly for them, and you must use your body as a temple to become the very best version of yourself. All the negative comments around the world telling girls to fit into a certain category, and aspire to having a 'perfect figure'. If you look around your work place, classroom or the coffee shop you're sitting in. You'll soon realize that the 'perfect body' comes in all shapes in sizes. To the couple by the window, to him, she has the perfect body, to the best friends shopping and enjoying life, to each other, the other has the perfect body, to the dad seeing his daughter walk down the isle, to him she has the perfect body. A persons inner self, dictates how beautiful their body is and how much love you feel for yourself dictates how perfect you are. You could meet the most beautiful person, in societies standards, in the world, and if she opens her mouth and lovely things don't pour out of it, somehow she isn't as perfect anymore.

#DROPTHEPLUS is an online campaign to push companies to eliminate the 'plus' from their labels. The revolution first started when model Stefania Ferrario posted on instagram how she was tired of being told she was a plus sized model, just because she was over a size 4. Most plus sized models are barely a size 8, which is really harmful to the girls looking at these images. It's sending the message that being over a size 4 is bad, it is also sending the message that if you are over a size 8, and an 8 is considered plus sized, then what are you?

Many models that are considered plus-sized have joined in this movement, this is what model Mayashia had to say about the word plus-sized and if it is damaging: Plus size does have a negative connotation, as it infers that models in the size-8-and-above category, which is where plus size begins, are somehow inferior to smaller-sized models despite doing the same work. I also think it's damaging to the demographic we represent. Considering that the models working on this side of the industry most accurately represent the bodies of most American women, if titles are needed it might be more accurate to call us 'standard size' as opposed to 'high fashion' models.

Besides #DROPTHEPLUS, many other retailers world wide are recognizing the unrealistic body standards the media poses. Lane Bryant, a major plus size retailer in the US, started a campaign using the #ImNoAngel, although many viewed this as an attack on Victoria's Secret, the brand is saying that they are not bashing anyone, they are just trying to show their customer that they are beautiful even if they don't have the same body as a Victoria's Secret model.

Although it's not a plus sized chain, even retailers such as Aerie, are seeing the impact that Photoshop, and the unrealistic body standards are having on women. Aerie recently have started a campaign that everyone can agree with, showing healthy, beautiful women that have not been retouched.

It's hard in a world constantly bombarding us all with images of how we should look, and how we should be. It's refreshing to see major fashion brands taking a stand, and showing us all that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. It is so important that women feel confident in their bodies. We all know how much better you feel when you wake up in the morning and put on something that makes you look and feel amazing, and the number on the label inside those clothes, shouldn't make you feel differently.

Toronto Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015

It seems like we finally saw the final snowflake melt, and now we're back again talking about this upcoming winter. But that is one of the many joys of living in the great north. Fashion week in Toronto saw many new and upcoming trends, and although you don't want to think about winter, and all that snow again, most trends you can incorporate into your style for the upcoming spring and summer! You can get a head start on these trends and master them before the first snowflake hits the ground. We found the top 5 most dominate trends, and we're going to show you how you can get a head start on these upcoming trends for the spring /summer months! Don't forget to share them with you and see how you can incorporate these trends, into your summer / spring wardrobes, using the #fashionhumber and #HeartMyBlog!

1. Asymmetry
Forever 21 $22

You've probably noticed asymmetrical skirts and dresses, shirts and shorts even, popping up all over stores across the country. First there was only a few, and as the months progress it seems there are more and more. This is a very easy trend to start wearing at this time of year!

2. Backpacks

Matt & Nat $215, Nordstrom
This is going to be a very convenient trend in September, because honestly, it's not fun carrying your new purse that you want to show off...with your lame school bookbag. If the bookbag is the new trend there will be no need for that new purse, which means less to carry and investing all your purse and bookbag funds, into just the bookbag, meaning you'll have one insanely stylish school bag.

3. Wraps

H&M, $40

Oversized EVERYTHING, has been in style these last few seasons, over sized scarf, oversized cardigan, and now a combination of the two! You can easily wrap this around your body like a scarf, but also have the pleasure of wearing it like a sweater, the best of both worlds! So far spring has been pretty cool, with chilly winds, so trying out this trend right now, is totally justifiable.

4. Marabou
Forever 21, $41

This was covering the runways last week at Toronto fashion week. The marabou feathers look gorgeous flowing along the catwalk! You could try out this trend in a vest for spring!

5. Circles, Circles, Circles

Circle cutouts, bags, and circle everything, we're seen at this years fashion week! This trend is super easy to get into right now, with circle bags popping up in stores in gorgeous pastel spring colours!

H&M, $35
We can't wait to see what you do with these trends!

Rihanna: The new face of Dior

Apparently Rihanna has many other talents then being an amazing singer, she also is going to be the new face of Dior. An opportunity that the singer is very excited about. Rihanna is the first black woman in history to ever be the face of a Dior campaign. Dior confirmed that Rihanna is set to star in their Secret Garden film, along with Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, and Marion Cotillard.

Rihanna is very excited about this opportunity and she stated that " It is such a big deal for me, and for my culture, for a lot of girls of any culture. I think, to be acknowledged by Dior is just...it means a lot as a woman to feel beautiful and timeless, and elegant."

This just continues the brands ever growing and ever evolving brand, that morphs into the times and has been hiring a younger face for their campaigns in the last few years, but doing so in a way that maintains that everlasting, timeless feeling we all get when we see the name Dior.

We can't wait to see what Rihanna and Dior have in store for us.

Paris Fashion Week!

Fashion season has come to an end sadly, but on a brighter note, we have all these great new garments and trends to gawk about. We picked the 5 best moments of Paris Fashion Week, and hopefully it inspires your wardrobe this week.

1. Givenchy

Due to the unfortunate fact that Givenchy's muse, Bettina Graziani passed away last week, the collection was done in order to pay homage to her. The models strutted down the runway wearing many jewels, slicked back hair, nose rings, tear drops and they we're covered in gang signs. They wore fit and flare outfits, with Spanish influenced colours, like maroons and blacks. The garments were tailored perfectly and they had splashes of Victorian influence throughout. There were 2 patterns used in the collection, satyr and peacock. The gowns featured as part of the evening collection, glimmered and glistened as they made their way down the runway. The gowns were so elegant that there is argument that they are at the couture level.

2. Chloe

A line inspired by the 70's and landing on International Women's Day, couldn't of been better portrayed then it was in this collection. The line captured the essence of the modern working woman, and the 70's and made it fantastic. For Chloe girl, there are boyish looks, attached to frilly blouses, making every look tasteful and fierce. Flowy dresses, vests and skinny scarves, jumpsuits, and shearling leather coats, perfectly captured the look of a peasant girl and soft pastels were placed throughout the lingerie.

3. Celine

This season Celine went for something very different, patches of different fabrics covered coats and dresses, mimicking the checkered floor, and huge bags were attached to each models arm. The models wore white sneakers and had little straps hanging out of their garments, it looked intended as if everything was a little unfinished.

4. Emanuel Ungaro

Black and white filled the runways, with a black runway to highlight this trend of course. Evening wear was highlighted in this show and tuxedos, penguin suits, white jumpsuits, black and white dots, and the perfect amount of graphic contrast to keep the black and white theme interesting.

5. Kenzo

Kenzo had their favourite group make an original song just for their runway show! Oversized wraps, ponchos, coats and throws made the collection look super cozy. They also showed shiny floral suits, button down shirts and sweeping skirts.

TOM*

As many of you know, last Monday was the first day, of the second annual Toronto Men's Fashion Week or TOM*. Globally the mens fashion industry is worth about $400 billion, opposed to it's female counterpart which is worth $620 billion. And although female models make figures in the millions male models often make six figures. But the men's fashion is definitely making a splash and giving the women's fashion world a run for their money. With TOM* having it's second successful year, the future of men's fashion is looking very bright, with the shift in cultural the modern man isn't ashamed of loving clothes and looking great.

The runway shows started Wednesday and ran until Friday at College park. This has inspired so many Canadian men to embrace their fashion side, and retailers are seeing more and more men coming into stores with tear sheets, wanting the latest fashion. It's great seeing Canadian men take such an interest in fashion, and it is putting Toronto on the map as a very fashionable place to be.

TOM* saw an modern take on traditional silhouettes, from minimalistic looks to all out glamour, there was something for every taste this week. Canadian fashion was in full force and TOM* was the star on all of our Instagrams. Some of the designers that were featured in TOM* were as follows: Collar Clothing, MensFashion4Hope, HD Homme, The Wild North Apparel, and Christopher Bates.

TOM* is always looking for volunteers and the ticket prices range from $20 per show, to $65 per day. So be sure to keep a look out for next years show if you missed this years!

NYFW Biggest Trends

New York fashion week is always a time to look back on the previous months and look forward to the next, planning out and predicting what will be seen on the streets in the upcoming seasons. Being such an important event in our industry, along with the amazing clothing we also can expect to see incredible celebrities sitting in the front row, such as North West sitting beside Anna Wintour and the Queen herself on the opposite side.

Here are the top 5 trends this NYFW

1. New York fashion week was bursting with 1970's style, but also with new upcoming fashion faces.

Models strutted the runway looking like a blast from the past, with plaids and checkers a prominent trend again this fall, but with a black and red colour story.

2. Tangerine was the most eye catching colour this year, with touches throughout each collection we can be sure it will be seen in abundance this upcoming fall.
Along with the tangerine, we were taken for surprise in seeing how many spring and summer colours surfaced such as lavender and peach.

3. This year fringe was just as big as fur, it was seen on accessories, dresses, coats and skirts.

4. Poppy and coral tones made the runway, and the models pop on the runway. What a beautiful colour choice!

5. Chromatic furs stunned us this season, with effortless and elegance radiating off of the garments, the only thing better then looking at these garments is wearing them.

Cinderella is in the air!

Maybe it's just us, but lately there has been more and more designers coming up with Cinderella based themes, and it's definitely because the newest Cinderella film is coming out in just a few short weeks!

Disney asked 9 designers to create their own rendition of what Cinderella's slipper would look like! The collaborations will be featured in stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, and Galeries Lafayette, featuring sparkle from the best, Swarovski.
The designers include: Jimmy Choo, Alexandre Birman, Charlotte Olympia, Jerome C. Rosseau, Nicholas Kirkwood, Paul Andrew, Salvatore Ferragamo, Rene Caovilla and Stuart Weitzman.

The shoes are said to be available in early March!

Many other people are hopping on the Cinderella inspiration band wagon as well.

We all know and love Lauren Conrad for her impeccable style and from our favourite MTV show 'The Hills', after she's written 7 books has decided to continue on with her collaboration with Kohl's, with inspiration from Disney's Cinderella, and we are so very glad she did!

The collection features pastels and neutrals with a whimsical feel. No matter how old you get, every person has always dreamed of drifting off into one of Disney's classic fairy tales, and now you finally can!

Lauren is the star in the campaign, featuring herself in a enchanted forest setting, which includes teepees, tea cups and fairy light. Her inspiration from the collection came from Disney's 1950 Cinderella film, which is apparent in the bows, sparkle, leaves and castles. The 24 piece collection consists of dresses, skirts, sweaters and knits starting at $44-$80. This collection is perfect for anyone who has ever dreamed of being a princess, featuring a glass slipper sweater, a tulle skirt, fawn heels, and organza bow back dress and a tea length skirt!

The collection is expected to be available in stores and online for purchase on February 22, just in time for Disney's newest adaptation of the film, Cinderella in theatres March 13!
